Crash Data Recorders
Bill Dickinson | Joseph Hubert | Jim Casassa
Many vehicles today have data recorders that store info such as speed, throttle position, brake application and seat belt usage. The data is typically recorded if an event has occurred and can be downloaded with special software. These events are classified as air bag deployment and non-deployments such as hard braking, rollover and side impact collisions. Some commercial trucks have data that goes back three months showing daily miles traveled, average speed and time of operation.
Passenger vehicles that we can download include GM, Ford, Chrysler and some Suzuki, Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Sterling vehicles. Commercial truck engines that we can download include Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Cummins, Mack, Mercedes Benz and Volvo. The exact list is in the link below. It is updated on a monthly basis as more vehicles are supported by download software. Current law states that all passenger vehicles produced after September 1, 2012 are required to be able to be downloaded by non-original equipment manufacturer (OEM) entities.
The downloaded data is used to supplement physical evidence to do an accident reconstruction of the collision. Our specially trained and qualified traffic accident reconstructionists can answer your questions about the data available.
